Table tennis is, at its purest, a sport of “friction”. Technical progress, reading spin and calibrating a stroke demand cognitive effort and motor memory built at the table. And yet we are living through a silent epidemic in the clubs: problems appear when convenience turns an active process into an essentially passive one. Real learning needs “friction”.

The illusion of the shortcut

Today there is a flood of instructions and near-miraculous promises on YouTube and TikTok that claim to shorten your path to improvement. The player watches a 30-second clip on how to hit a perfect drive against a chopper and gets a false sense of intellectual mastery. But table tennis happens in fractions of a second. At the table, what reacts is the body that actively repeated the movement, not the brain that consumed the video lying on the couch.

The “Coach GPT-y” and the cost of illogical gear

Passivity affects not only technique, but above all the choice of equipment. Here at 360TT, we often meet frustrated customers who threw a lot of money down the drain. They show up with extremely stiff rackets and hyper-fast, uncontrollable rubbers, completely incompatible with their own playing style.

The reason? They asked a generic Artificial Intelligence (our “Coach GPT-y”, a Brazilian pun on ChatGPT) “what is the best setup to attack” or copied an Olympic champion’s racket after watching a video. They outsourced a process that should be about “table time”.

AI can read technical specifications, but it doesn’t know how long your back-swing is, how fast your wrist accelerates or how humid the gym where you train is. Testing gear at random based on loose tips is a trap that drains the player in three ways:

Financially: spending a lot on the wrong rackets.

Physically: throwing the body off balance while trying to compensate for a badly tuned setup.

Cognitively: the constant anxiety of not knowing whether the mistake came from your arm or from your racket.

It is infinitely cheaper (financially, physically and cognitively) to choose a gear combination that is simply “logical” for your current technical moment and to commit actively (table time) to adapting to it. Real progress is not in the next click; it demands the practical “friction” of serious training.

5 practical tips to leave passive mode and win more matches

If you want to take active control of your development and stop outsourcing your progress to screens, apply these five real fundamentals at the table:

Serve: practice your serve every day. The serve is your first attack, and its basic goal is to make your opponent return the ball the way you want. The better your serve, the more trouble you cause your opponent.

Blade: use a slower blade than your current one. Most players use blades faster than ideal for their technical level and tighten up their arm when hitting. Every racket will feel faster at the end of a game tied at 10-10.

Where you attack: where you attack matters more than how hard you attack. Attack where your opponent isn’t or, if he is standing close to the table, toward the elbow of his racket arm. Well-angled attacks, to the right or to the left, are very effective at pulling your opponent out of position.

Strategy: study your opponent and look for weaknesses to exploit. When you find one, exploit it without mercy. You will shake his confidence and have a better chance of winning the game. Also map his strengths and do whatever you can so that he can’t use them.

Relaxed stroke: hitting with a relaxed arm generates more power (force + spin). The more force you put into the stroke, the lower its speed and, consequently, the less power. The secret to a truly strong ball is not force but relaxation.

The sport demands sweat

Table tennis demands that you deal with difficulty, make mistakes, adjust and come back stronger. Digital tools and videos are great starting points to open your mind, but they should stop there. They don’t replace the bucket of balls, the sweat and the expertise of those who live the sport firsthand.

Now I want to hear from you: have you ever bought gear because of a video or an AI answer? How did it go? Tell us in the comments!

Now that you’ve reached the end of the text and have already exercised your brain actively with so much reflection, how about stopping by our store and investing in something logical for your game? Don’t let artificial intelligence choose your racket. Gear of guaranteed origin and real support is what you find at 360TT! 🏓🔥

We see this scene every week at table tennis clubs across Brazil. The player walks into the gym with the trendy racket case. Out of it comes a state-of-the-art carbon blade, worth thousands of reais, assembled with the fastest tensioned rubbers on the market or hefty “Domestic” versions.

During warm-up, it’s a show, or almost. He tries to imitate Ma Long’s torso rotation. He tries Fan Zhendong’s aggressive chiquita. It’s beautiful to watch. But then the tournament starts. And in the first round, he loses to a veteran using a 5-ply all-wood blade, with commercial rubbers from three years ago, or even an old pips rubber. The veteran does nothing incredible. He just blocks, pushes the ball with a consistent shoto, and waits.

The result? The “ace” with the R$ 3,000 racket loses 3 to 0. He sends the ball flying into the wall, dumps it into the net, and leaves the table huffing, glaring at his own racket with a look of disapproval, as if it were to blame.

If you’ve ever been one of these characters, it’s time for a tough talk.

TL;DR: the Equipment Junkie (EJ) believes his idol’s racket brings his idol’s talent along with it, and uses buying as a defense mechanism so he doesn’t have to admit he lacks training. Add the YouTube drive syndrome and it becomes an endless cycle: impossible shot, ball in the net, blame the gear, pricier racket. The way out is to step down a level, put your ego away and go back to the foundation.

The cowardice of the “EJ” (Equipment Junkie)

In table tennis, the addiction to buying new equipment has a world-famous name: Equipment Junkie (EJ). It’s the player who spends far more time online reading about sponge thickness and types of synthetic fiber than training at the club or even just having fun at the table.

The secret dream of every EJ is that, when he buys his idol’s racket, the box will come with a little jar of “pixie dust” (in Brazil, we call it pó de pirlimpimpim, the magic powder from a classic children’s book series). Deep down, he believes that by rubbing this magic dust on the rubber, his body will be taken over by Chinese talent and his drive will come out identical to that of the famous player the blade is named after. But the credit card goes through, the package arrives, and the heavy, slow arm is exactly the same as before.

And I have to be very honest with you: in the overwhelming majority of cases, this frantic hunt for the perfect racket is not a hunt for performance. It’s a defense mechanism. It’s cowardice.

It’s much easier and less painful for your ego to spend R$ 800 on a new rubber than to admit you’re too lazy to “bend your knees” and train. When the ball goes into the net, the expensive racket gives you the perfect excuse: “Damn, I’m still getting used to the catapult on this ZLC carbon”. No. You’re not getting used to anything. You just didn’t reach the ball because your legs are slow and your center of gravity is too high, or your technique is far below what’s needed. The racket became your luxury scapegoat, your conscience bribe.

The YouTube drive syndrome

This equipment problem takes on dramatic proportions when it meets the curse of the digital age. We consume 15-second highlights on Instagram. You watch the top 10 star you admire hit an explosive super drive far from the table, and you want to reproduce it at your club the very next day.

That is the arrogance of skipping the basics. What the YouTube video doesn’t show you are the thousands of hours that athlete spent doing monotonous lateral footwork drills, blocking, backhand/forehand transitions and physical conditioning. Trying to execute a world-class shot without a mastered foundation (technique) is like trying to build the penthouse of a luxury tower on a plot of sand. It will collapse under pressure.

The meat grinder: the cycle of mediocrity

This is where you get stuck and stop improving. The cycle is cruel, and I’ve watched dozens of talented players die in it:

You try the magic YouTube shot.

Since you have neither the technique nor the physical conditioning, you arrive late and send the ball flying.

Your ego won’t let you admit the failure was yours (physical and technical).

You blame the equipment. You think it lacked “catapult” or “bow”.

You buy a faster, harder-to-control (and pricier) racket, thinking it will do the movement for you (the pixie dust illusion).

You try the YouTube shot again, only now the mistake is even more grotesque because the super-fast racket forgives nothing.

You get trapped in an endless cycle where you become the biggest “equipment expert” in the bleachers, but never get past the round of 16 of a regional tournament.

The 360TT verdict: the bitter pill

The table tennis market wants you to buy ever more expensive rackets. But I’m a coach. I want you to win matches and improve. And the cure for this disease requires swallowing your pride.

Step down a level (or two): put your carbon rocket in the drawer. Grab a 5-ply blade, like an OFF- or ALL+, and fit it with controllable commercial rubbers. Feel the ball in your hand again.

Put your ego in your bag: forget the internet-video point. Stop trying to play the prettiest point in the gym and lose the next 5; start playing the safest point.

Go back to the foundation: for the next three months, your focus should be just one thing: training the basics, serve, legs and consistency.

The magic racket doesn’t exist, and it doesn’t come with pixie dust. What exists is sweat, repetition and the humility to understand that, in table tennis, there are no shortcuts.

The table always collects the bill for what you didn’t train.

So, does the shoe fit?

The choice is yours now: keep being the rubber expert in the bleachers or put your ego in your bag and go train. How many “YouTube aces” or EJs do you know at your club? Do you dare to share this post with them?

Now I want to hear from you (if you dare): what’s the most expensive racket or rubber you’ve ever bought thinking it would save your game? Answer honestly in the comments.

The table is waiting for you!

Stop "Licking" Your Racket: Let's Raise the Level of Our Vocabulary?

Brazilian table tennis is going through an incredible phase. We have world-class idols, top-level equipment and a passionate community. But we need to have a serious (and slightly painful) conversation about our vocabulary (the Portuguese one, that is).

It seems we’ve been invaded by a legion of “Google Translate parrots”. Plenty of good people keep repeating terms that, besides being wrong, border on the comical. Today I decided to play the “annoying friend” so we can look at three linguistic crimes you probably commit (or hear every day at the table).

1. “I’m going to change my lâmina” (careful not to cut yourself)

Friend, if you call your racket a “lâmina” (the Portuguese word for a razor blade), I sincerely hope you’re wearing protective gloves.

This happens because, in English, the wooden part is called the blade. The automatic translator, which doesn’t play table tennis, translates it as “lâmina” (as in a razor blade or a microscope slide). But let’s be honest: calling a structure of 7 plies of noble wood, carbon and an FL handle a “lâmina” hurts the ears.

🤓 360TT technical view

The correct term here is MADEIRA (Portuguese for “wood”; or just blade, if you want to be international).

“Lâmina” implies a single cutting surface. A table tennis blade is a technological “sandwich” of pressed layers (sheets, or plies). The correct terminology honors the engineering of the material.

2. The so-called “hexagonal racket” (geometry sends its regards)

I think this mistake is the pirates’ fault. Stiga launched the novelty Cybershape. Then the copycat “factories” looked at it, were too lazy to count the sides and called it: “raquete hexagonal” (hexagonal racket).

And the Brazilian table tennis player embraced it. But let’s go back to 5th grade for a second? No jokes, okay…

A hexagon has 6 sides. Count the sides of the head of your “different” racket.

Top, upper diagonals, straight sides, lower diagonals… Oops! It went past 6 a long time ago.

🤓 360TT technical view

Geometrically, the Cybershape (and its copies) has 7 visible sides in the playing area, which would make it a heptagon. But we have to count the base of the handle as a side (where the rubber’s lettering is), and with that it becomes an irregular octagon.

Calling it hexagonal is a gross observation error that oversimplifies a complex impact-area distribution technology. Still in doubt? Remove the rubber from the lâm… oops, madeira, and count the sides. You found 8, right?

3. “Ponto doce” (what does it taste like?)

We’ve reached my favorite. The famous sweet spot. In English, sweet in this context means “smooth”, “just right”. But then they translated it word for word as “ponto doce” (literally “sweet point”, as in sugar-sweet).

Honestly, does your rubber taste like strawberry? Do you lick your racket after a winning drive? If the answer is no, stop saying that your racket’s “ponto doce” is good.

🤓 360TT technical view

The correct technical term is IDEAL IMPACT AREA (in Portuguese, “área de impacto ideal”) or even CENTER OF PERCUSSION (“centro de percussão”).

It is the region of the blade where vibration is minimal and energy transfer to the ball is maximal. There is no taste involved whatsoever, it’s pure wave and vibration physics.

Precision in speech, power in play

It may look like I’m just nitpicking (with a bit of humor, come on…), but precision in our terms reflects how seriously we take our sport. At 360TT, we are obsessed with this technical precision.

It is this same obsession with detail that led us to develop the SpeedUp X booster. While some people are busy translating wrong, we were in the lab creating a booster that truly delivers speed and spin, with no “papo furado” (empty talk). If you want to stop making mistakes at the table (and in your vocabulary), count on the people who understand the science behind the racket.

SpeedUp X booster360TT high-viscosity booster: power without losing the firmness of the rubber. 60ml bottle with applicator tip.

Now I want to hear from you: what other bizarre term do you hear at your club?

In table tennis, the greatest hero of all time, Ma Long, did not use the same “weapon” his whole life. The story of his blades is the story of his evolution as an athlete. Many players, especially beginners and intermediates, look for the “perfect blade”, believing they will find one model that will serve them forever. Ma Long’s career teaches exactly the opposite: choosing a blade should be a journey, a process that follows and boosts the player’s technical development.

Chapter 1: the start with a pure wood blade (2011-2013)

The story: At the beginning of his domination on the world stage, Ma Long played with pure wood rackets, with no synthetic fibers. Models like the Hurricane Long 2 and, above all, the Hurricane Long 3 (7 plies of pure wood) were his choices. It was with a pure wood racket that he played the 2013 World Championships in Paris, a period marked by sublime control, extreme spin and unmatched ball feel.

🤓 360TT technical view

Ma Long, the master, started with the foundation. And that is the lesson for everyone: starting with a pure wood racket (no fiber) is essential. This is the stage where you develop correct technique, ball touch and reading of the game. A blade without carbon fibers “forgives” mistakes less and therefore forces the athlete to refine the fundamentals. It is the foundation of a great player.

Chapter 2: the great turn to carbon (2013-2014)

The story: In 2014, the sport went through a drastic change: the introduction of the 40+ plastic ball. Slower and with less spin, the new ball required athletes to generate more power on their own. Ma Long, always a strategist, realized he needed a new tool. That is when he made the transition to the legendary Hurricane Long 5 (HL5). This blade represented a technological leap, with a structure of 5 plies of wood and 2 inner plies of Arylate-Carbon (5+2 AC). He started using it back in 2013, when he won the Chinese National Championship, and from 2014 on it became his inseparable partner.

🤓 360TT technical view

This is the crucial moment in a player’s journey. When technique is solid and strokes are consistent, but speed is missing to close out points, it is time to consider a blade with fiber. Ma Long’s HL5 is the perfect example of an intelligent transition: the carbon is placed internally, next to the core. This adds speed and power but keeps a high degree of control and feel, making it the ideal step for anyone coming from a pure wood racket.

Chapter 3: the golden era of the Grand Slam (2015-2021)

The story: With the Hurricane Long 5 in his hands, Ma Long became a force of nature. It became his “champion blade”. In 2015, using the HL5 and Hurricane 3 rubbers on both sides, he won the World Championships, the World Cup and the World Tour Finals. The peak came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when he used the same setup to become the only man in history to win the Double Grand Slam (two-time Olympic, World and World Cup champion). The feat was so monumental that DHS released a commemorative edition, the Gold Slam Hurricane Long 5.

🤓 360TT technical view

Reaching your maximum potential is not about having the fastest blade from day one. It is about having the right blade at the right moment of your development. Ma Long’s most victorious phase came after he made a strategic equipment change, aligning his new blade with the maturity of his game and the new demands of the sport. That proves that proper equipment progression is a key to unlocking your best table tennis.

The 360TT expert analysis

The story does not stop. Even at the top, Ma Long and DHS kept innovating, with versions like the Hurricane Long 5X, which uses a thicker-core technology to adapt even better to the 40+ ball.

The lesson from Ma Long’s journey is clear. Don’t look for the “best blade in the world”; look for the “best blade for you, right now”. Think of your career as chapters. Start with a pure wood racket to build your fundamentals. When your game evolves and asks for more speed, make a controlled transition to a blade with inner carbon. Your blade is not a static piece; it is your partner in evolution.
